Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle didn’t stop in for a facial treatment or a haircut at Glaze Beauty. But he left them with something they’ll value.

The lieutenant governor presented the state’s Excellence in Innovation Award to Glaze Beauty Boutique and Day Spa during his visit to Effingham County on Thursday.

“I’m very excited,” Glaze owner Paula Duggar said. “We’ve worked hard, and it’s paid off.”

Glaze will celebrate its second anniversary in November, and Duggar said owners of nearby businesses will seek her advice.

“On occasion, I think I’m a little bit insane,” she said. “But I live day by day, and I’m very positive.”

It’s that kind of attitude she tries to tell her fellow business owners to keep.

“If you have it in here,” she said, pointing to her heart, “you can do it. You have to believe in yourself. Everyone is going to tell you how you can’t make it.”

Duggar and her staff also have been creative in continuing to keep their doors turning. Gift certificates have allowed customers to come in and keep her employees busy.

“The statistics for this industry is that it dies in the summer,” she said.

She also offered a special for all Effingham County School System employees, with each getting a free haircut. She got the most response from the bus drivers.

“And now they’re loyal clients,” Duggar said. “They’re very, very good clients.”

Cagle praised the Duggars, Paula and her husband Mike, for investing their capital in their business.

“The private sector is where real job creation occurs,” he said.

The lieutenant governor, who faces a re-election challenge in November, said the state has stepped up its economic development efforts.

“The deal sheet is very, very strong,” Cagle said.
