Each Tuesday, the cadets of the Effingham Cadet Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol meet to learn about aviation, aerospace engineering, search and rescue, and leadership.

The local squadron meets from 6-8 p.m. at 226 Goshen Rd. in building 500, room 507.

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a volunteer, civilian auxiliary arm of the U.S. Air Force.

The cadet squadron is open to those ages 12 to 21. Membership is $30 annually, for adult members it is $69 annually.

Joining the Civil Air Patrol gives youth interested in flying significant exposure to aviation. Cadets don’t learn to fly, but there are scholarships and other programs that cadets can be eligible to receive.

Each cadet gets to go on a few short orientation flights. They also learn quite a lot about aviation.
Civil Air Patrol cadets wear a uniform patterned after the Air Force uniform and participate in drills and other military training.

Customs and courtesies, drills, ceremony are taught, as well as how to follow and become leaders.

The CAP’s cadet education program is a 16-step program that involves testing physical fitness, leadership qualities and aerospace education.

Starting in November, cadets will be introduced to model rocketry. Civil Air Patrol’s model rocketry program is an achievement program for cadets
interested in the science, technology and flight of model rockets.

Interested teens and adults are welcome to come to a meeting and see what the cadet and adult program is all about.
