Effingham Orchestra to strike up patriotic concert, silent auction

POSTED: June 18, 2012 5:37 p.m.

Effingham Community Orchestra Director Andrea Huff has announced that the orchestra will present its “Something Old, Something New, Something Patriotic Too” concert and silent auction fundraiser on Sunday at the Effingham County Recreation and Parks gymnasium.

The gym is at 808 Highway 119 South in Springfield.  The silent auction begins at 2:30 p.m. and will offer many items and gift certificates from local businesses. The concert begins at 3 p.m. with a variety of musical styles. Admission is free.

“We have planned for this to be one of the most exciting afternoons in the history of our orchestra,” Huff said. “The title of the program, ‘Something Old, Something New, Something Patriotic Too,’ describes the concert perfectly. We’ll perform some of our favorite pieces from the past, some new pieces that our audiences have not yet heard us perform, and a variety of patriotic music to honor both active members of our military and our veterans.

“This year’s silent auction will be our largest to date,” Huff added. “We have had a huge number and variety of items donated for this auction. There will be gift certificates to local businesses, new items and excellent quality vintage estate items. There will absolutely be something for everyone. All proceeds from the auction will go directly toward orchestra expenses so that we can continue providing these wonderful free concerts for our community.

“The orchestra has rehearsed many hours for this concert,” Huff said. “We invite everyone to make this concert a part of your summer fun. Join us for the afternoon. Enjoy our wonderful music and help our fundraising efforts by participating in our silent auction.”

The five-year-old Effingham Community Orchestra is comprised of both adult and high school youth musicians. The orchestra has performed quarterly concerts and for community events at various locations throughout the county. None of its members or leaders receive any compensation. The orchestra is funded solely by contributions from participants and interested supporters.
