A near-record crowd was thrilled by the Effingham Community Orchestra’s concert June 24at the Effingham County Recreation & Parks Department Gymnasium in Springfield. The concert, "Something Old, Something New, Something Patriotic, Too," and a silent auction fundraiser attracted attendees from throughout the county and surrounding areas.

The audience was treated to a broad range of traditional, popular, classical, and patriotic favorites. Included were selections from "The Wizard of Oz," "Grease," and "Hawaii Five-O." In addition, the orchestra performed several classical pieces.

The orchestra’s jazz ensemble also entertained with several "big band" numbers that had the audience members tapping their feet, clapping and enjoying themselves.

In what has proven to be an audience favorite over the years, the orchestra played "Marches of the Armed Forces." As the orchestra performed this selection of marches, all military veterans and active duty personnel were asked to stand and be recognized as the marches of their respective branches were played.

After the orchestra closed with the "1812 Overture." the audience showed its appreciation with a prolonged standing ovation.

"In many ways, this was our best concert ever," said orchestra director Andrea Huff. "During the five years since the orchestra was formed, our musicians have made individual progress and have become a more seasoned and experienced orchestra. Our performances exhibit the pure joy our musicians experience when playing together and bringing music to our audience.

"We were absolutely delighted with the large turnout and the enthusiastic reception we received," Huff added. "We had a record number of quality items donated to our silent auction by local businesses and individuals. We are very thankful for those donations and for the positive response to the auction. The entire event was a huge success. We depend totally upon donations, sponsors, and fundraisers for our financial needs. The generosity of our audiences and supporters enables us to bring these free concerts to our community."

The five-year-old Effingham Community Orchestra is comprised of both adult and high school youth musicians. They have performed quarterly concerts and for community events at various locations throughout the county.

The orchestra is accepting new adult and high school student musicians. Additional information may be obtained by visiting the orchestra’s Web site, www.effinghamcommunityorchestra.org. Huff encourages all interested musicians to call her at the orchestra’s office phone, 826-5300, Ext. 25, or email her at effinghamcommunityorchestra@windstream.net.
