The elves are coming, the elves are coming!

The Effingham Chamber of Commerce announced that this year’s retail shopping in Effingham campaign will get kicked off Sunday at the 18th annual Chamber Holiday Classic Business and Craft Expo at Effingham County High School from noon to 4 p.m. The shopping campaign revolves around mischeiveous creatures called Elves for Catie.

This program was so popular last year that the elves are back again. They will be introduced at the Holiday Classic and will be available at select local retailers next week. The Elves for Catie were created after Tre and Jenny Wilkins lost their daughter to childhood cancer. The elf was her favorite toy.

There are both boy and girl elves and can be purchased separately or as part of a special kit containing an elf, an Elves for Catie book, and "elf food" – jelly beans. Elves are $15 and kits are $25. Following the Holiday Classic, they can be found at TeachRight, Butterducks Winery, GeoVista Credit Union, Sweet Peas, Joann’s Florist, Madrac Farms, the Curiosity Shoppe, Holiday Inn North, and Medicap Pharmacy.

"This is one event that the community really looks forward to each year," Chamber President Talbert Edenfield said of the Holiday Classic. "I can almost taste the delicious Thanksgiving dinner the 4-H cooks up already."

The Chamber said that there will only be one entrance for the public as it was last year. The back door by the cafeteria will be locked so attendees will come down the hallway to see the wreaths in the auction, and to see the first booths. The public is asked to enter the gym door on the northeast corner of the building.

The annual event will feature entertainment on stage at Effingham County High School, the 4-H meal, pictures with Santa starting at 1 p.m., and a variety of business and arts and crafts booths. Entertainers will include the ECHS Chorus, BDC-Britt’s Dance Company, A Class Act Dance Academy, the Coastal Performing Arts Academy, and line dancing by the YMCA.

There will be an auction to purchase holiday wreaths made by area schools with the proceeds going to the Empty Stocking Fund.

The Thanksgiving meal costs $8 and the community is encouraged to get their order in early to be sure they get theirs. Call the 4-H at 754-8040 or the Chamber at 754-3301 to place an order.
