POSTED: January 10, 2013 7:43 p.m.

A man on a bicycle struck by a tractor-trailer Wednesday night remains in serious condition in a Savannah hospital, according to authorities.

The man, identified as Douglas Edwards of Bloomingdale, was riding a bicycle on Highway 80 near the Effingham-Chatham county line Wednesday just before 7 p.m. He also may have been drinking alcohol while on his bicycle. According to reports, he was attempting to cross the highway when he was struck by a semi.

Lifestar was summoned to take the bicyclist to Memorial University Medical Center.

Charges are not expected to be filed against the driver of the semi, according to Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor. However, the bicyclist could possibly face charges, Ehsanipoor said.

The road was closed for approximately two hours.
