AASU to hold health careers summer camp

POSTED: January 17, 2013 8:15 p.m.

Armstrong Atlantic State University’s College of Health Professions announces its inaugural college health careers summer camp scheduled for July 21-27. The camp is for rising high school juniors and seniors who are interested in a career in health care.

While students are attending camp, they will stay in one of Armstrong’s residence halls and become immersed in the college setting. The camp will feature sessions conducted by health professions faculty, hands-on lab experiences, work with patient simulations, team projects and engaging evening activities.

“The Health Careers Summer Camp will give students the chance to intermingle with other future healthcare colleagues from across the region,” said Corine Ackerson-Jones, recruitment coordinator for the College of Health Professions. “Participants will increase their knowledge of the health career areas they want to pursue and give them a head start not only on their road to college but on their career path as well.”

The camp covers multiple career tracks — respiratory therapy, medical laboratory science, health science, nursing, radiologic science, communication sciences and disorders and physical therapy.

To apply, students need a minimum GPA of 3.0 and PSAT/SAT score minimums of 530 in critical reading and 430 in math with an overall score of 1,000. The required ACT scores are 24 in English and 18 in math with a composite score of 21. The cost of the camp is $150, and the application deadline is March 15.
