A bicyclist who was seriously injured in a December hit-and-run in Effingham County has died.

Mitchell Johnson, 47, was riding his bicycle south on Hodgeville Road near Forest Haven Road on Dec. 9 when he was hit from behind by an unknown vehicle.

He was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Johnson died Feb. 1 from the injuries caused by the crash, said Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

A person of interest has been identified, but no charges have been filed. The Georgia State Patrol’s specialized collision and reconstruction team continues to investigate the accident.

No witnesses to the crash have come forward. A driver passing by on Hodgeville Road noticed the wrecked bicycle and Johnson lying on the side of the road, and called 911.
