Effingham County was well represented at the state Capitol by students Sophie Usher and Rebecca Velasquez of Effingham County High School, as they paged for sate Rep. Jon Burns on Feb. 14 in the General Assembly.

They were able to meet Gov. Nathan Deal, as well as Speaker of the House David Ralston, and get pictures taken with both. The page program with the House of Representatives allows students 12 years of age and older an opportunity to visit the Capitol and help their state representative for the day.

They assist by delivering notes from constituents, lobbyists and other guests to representatives on the House floor. It is a unique opportunity to be a part of the assembly’s daily activities.

Also from Effingham was House Preacher of the Day, Jose Velasquez, father of Rebecca. He is the Reverend at Mizpah United Methodist Church in Effingham.

Rev. Velasquez came up to the Capitol on Feb. 14 to lead the House chamber in a sermon and prayer. House representatives nominate religious leaders from their communities to come and give a devotion before the start of the session each day.
