Order in the court!

POSTED: March 11, 2013 7:33 p.m.

The courtroom in the Historic Effingham Courthouse will be the center of action Saturday night.

The Mars Theatre and Statesboro’s Averitt Center for the Arts are teaming up to present “12 Angry Jurors” on Saturday at the Historic Effingham Courthouse. Tickets are $13 and the show starts at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re very happy to do this with the Averitt Center,” said Gussie Nease of the Springfield Revitalization Corporation.

A portion of the proceeds will go to the Mars Theatre restoration efforts, and the SRC is spearheading the renovation. County commissioners agreed at their Feb. 16 meeting to allow the use of the Historic Courthouse for the event.

“I was very pleased the commissioners are supporting this so much, and Adam Kobek has been a jewel in getting all this coordinated,” Nease said. “It’s been a team effort, as anything in this county that’s successful has to be.”

The play is a production of the Averitt STARS and is an adaptation of the acclaimed play “12 Angry Men,” in which a jury must determine the fate of a young man accused of killing his father. A guilty verdict means the death penalty, and the verdict must be unanimous. A juror has begun to show signs of doubt in the jury room.

“They had it last weekend in Screven County, and it was such a success,” Nease said of the play. “I’m looking forward to this weekend and the fact that it will be even moreso here in the Historic Courthouse.”

A few tickets remain, Nease said, though they are going quickly. For tickets, call Nease at 658-5053 or the Effingham Chamber of Commerce at 754-3301.
