Rincon Police officers and Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for the man who robbed the First Effingham Bank in Rincon on Highway 21 Monday afternoon.

According to authorities, around 2:15 p.m., a black male wearing an orange vest and a cowboy hat brandished a large, silver firearm and robbed the bank. The suspect made off with an undisclosed amount of money and fled to the parking lot, where he may have gotten into a car.

"We don’t have any (knowledge of his) mode of transportation, whether he left on foot or in a car," said Rincon Police Chief Phillip Scholl.

The suspect is described as about 5-foot-8 and 160 pounds. Police combed nearby neighborhoods following the robbery.

Chief Scholl said customers were leaving the building as the gunman walked in and four employees were on duty. No one was hurt in the incident.

Authorities are investigating whether the suspect is the same man who robbed a bank in Millen on Monday morning. According to police, a man robbed the Queensborough National Bank and Trust on East Winthorpe Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Before Monday, the last bank robbery in Rincon was at the GeoVista Credit Union in September 2010.

"It’s pretty rare," Scholl said. "There are other agencies around that face these type of crimes a lot more often than we do. Once every few years, we may have one."

Anyone with any information is asked to call the ECSO at 754-3449, the Rincon PD at 826-5200 or the Savannah FBI office at (912) 232-3716.
