Corn hole tournament pitches in for relief

POSTED: July 18, 2013 8:28 p.m.

When tornadoes hit Oklahoma recently, Living Faith Church in Guyton took action.

The church at 3789 Noel C. Conaway Road is hosting a family-friendly corn hole tournament Saturday, with nearly all of the day’s proceeds benefitting the tornado victims.

“It hits close to home,” said organizer Crystal Basdeo. “I’ve been that parent who had less than five minutes to get four kids downstairs before a tornado hit in Kansas City. My heart hurts for everyone who lost everything that they once knew in such a short period of time.”

Teams of two can register for the “Help Make It OK” corn hole tournament for $25. Registration starts at 8 a.m. Saturday, with games beginning at 9. The tournament will run all day long, until approximately 6 p.m.

For those unfamiliar with corn hole, it is a popular bean bag toss game. The teams will compete in a bracket system for the best scores, with the first- and second-place teams winning cash prizes.

Outside of the cash prizes for the top two teams, all other proceeds from the day’s events will be donated to Oklahoma relief efforts.

This family-friendly event has a little something for everyone. Along with corn hole games throughout the day for both adults and children, the “Help Make it OK” fundraiser will have bounce houses, carnival games, a dunk-a-pastor booth, raffle prizes, food and T-shirt sales.

Organizers said donations have come “from all over the community,” including raffle prizes, food to sell, and both a mobile screen printing unit and blank shirts to print on. Visitors will be able to print commemorative artwork on items of their own choosing, such as their own T-shirt from home, a hoodie or a blanket.
