Congressman launches ‘Barrow’s Bookworms’ for elementary students

POSTED: July 25, 2013 8:32 p.m.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Rep. John Barrow (D-Augusta) has launched a new program for students in Georgia’s 12th Congressional District, “Barrow’s Bookworms.”  The inaugural program is for students in elementary school for the 2013-14 academic year.

“I’m excited to announce the launch of this new program,” Barrow said. “I’m hoping this program will develop family ties and reading skills, both of which are essential for a successful future.  I hope folks will get involved and encourage others to participate, so we can make reading an enjoyable activity for our children at a young age.”

The reading portion of this program will begin Sept. 1 and will end Dec. 31. During this time the children, with the help of their families, are expected to read 20 books of their own choosing.  Parents will keep a log of the books each child reads throughout the program.  Each child that completes the 20-book reading requirement will participate in a spring awards ceremony where Barrow will present a certificate for completing the program.

In addition, Barrow is hosting a bookmark design contest for “Barrow’s Bookworms.” The contest winner’s bookmark will be distributed to every “Barrow’s Bookworms” participant in the 12th District. These bookmarks should display a picture depicting the importance of reading from a young person’s perspective.

More information on the program, and to download a reading log form, is available by contacting Congressman Barrow’s office.
