School council elections to be held in August

All Effingham County Schools will hold elections in August for their 2013-14 school councils.


Each school will have a meeting for parents to nominate and vote for the parent representatives on its school council. Parents may also be nominated on the written form that will be sent home with students.


Following is the schedule for parent election meetings:


Aug. 20
South Effingham High School – 4:30 p.m., cafeteria
Aug. 22
Ebenezer Elementary – 6 p.m., media center
Guyton Elementary – 8:30 a.m., media center
Marlow Elementary – 7 p.m., front conference room
Effingham County High School – 6 p.m., media center
Aug. 23    
Blandford Elementary – 8:30 a.m., front conference room
Aug. 26
Springfield Elementary – 6 p.m., gym
South Effingham Middle School – 4:30 p.m., conference room
Aug. 27
Rincon Elementary – 8 a.m., media center
Sand Hill Elementary – 8 a.m., cafeteria
South Effingham Elementary – 6 p.m., cafeteria
Aug. 28
Ebenezer Middle School – 6 p.m., conference room
Aug. 29
Effingham County Middle School – 6 p.m., lecture hall


Elections will be held to fill expiring terms, new terms and vacancies in unexpired terms. School council members will serve a two-year term, and will attend four meetings during the school year.


Voting for each school’s parent representatives will occur only at the scheduled parent election meeting. Parents who have children enrolled at the school for the 2013-14 school year are eligible to nominate, vote for and be elected as parent representatives. Parent representatives must be at least 18 years of age.


Schools will send meeting/election notices home to parents at the open house or with the students on the first day of school. The schools request that parents ask their children for the notices.


Each school council consists of seven members — four parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school (two of whom must be business associations), two certificated teachers and the school principal. While the school council is designed to serve as an advisory group, members will have a broad range of responsibilities and will receive specific information to assist them in carrying out their duties.


As with the parent members, the teachers on the school council are selected through an election process. School administrators will work with their certified staff to elect two teacher representatives.


Parents should contact the school’s principal if they have questions about the school councils or the election process prior to the election meeting.


The General Assembly requires that all public school systems in Georgia have school councils in place. The goal is to bring communities and schools closer together to solve difficult education problems, improve academic achievement, provide support for teachers and administrators, and bring parents into the school-based decision-making process.
