Subway to take part in Feed a Friend campaign

POSTED: August 19, 2013 8:51 p.m.

Subway restaurants in Effingham County will join others in the area Thursday for a day-long food drive to benefit local food pantries.

The Subway restaurants in Rincon, Springfield, Guyton and Faulkville will participate in their first Feed a Friend campaign Thursday during each restaurant’s regular hours of operation.

Customers who bring in a can of food or any other non-perishable food item and buy any regular six-inch Subway sandwich will receive a regular six-inch sub of equal or lesser price free.

“We are honored to be able to support our local communities,” said John Remegi, board chair of Subway restaurants of Savannah. “Being able to give back to the area in this manner, and help those in need, enables us to feed many more people than we would on any given day.”

Effingham is one of 23 counties participating in the Savannah-area Feed a Friend drive. The goal is to collect 5,000 pounds of non-perishable food for Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia and sister food banks.

“We are so appreciative of Subway’s commitment to our community and ending hunger,” said Mary Jane Crouch, executive director of Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia. “Their enthusiasm and support will help provide food to families and children that struggle with food insecurity.”

Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia serves children, senior citizens, low-income families and people with disabilities who are at-risk for hunger throughout southeastern Georgia. Second Harvest distributes nutritious food to non-profit agencies and at-risk elderly and youth.

Second Harvest partners with 300 churches and non-profit agencies to provide emergency food assistance across Coastal Georgia. Last year, Second Harvest food bank provided more than 8.1 million meals (more than 9.6 million pounds of food) to hungry people in the area.
