Alderman, Lee to run for mayor again

POSTED: August 26, 2013 7:46 p.m.

Barton Alderman and Ken Lee said they will seek re-election as mayor of their respective cities.

Alderman, the mayor of Springfield, announced late last week he will qualify for re-election. Qualifying for November’s municipal elections is being held this week in Guyton, Rincon and Springfield.

Alderman said he was at peace with his decision to run again, after consulting his family.

“I think we have a really good council,” he said. “I think we have a lot of good initiatives — the Mars Theatre, the streetscape — and we’ve got so many good things going, I didn’t see how I could not.”

Springfield City Council member Charles Hinely also announced he will seek re-election to a second full term on council. Alderman was re-appointed as mayor last October. He was a council member from 2001-04 and was mayor from 2004-09 when he opted not to seek re-election.

“I think we have a very good, very cohesive council,” the mayor said. “We’re trying to look forward, trying to plan.”

Hinely and fellow Springfield councilman Kenny Usher qualified Monday for re-election.

Lee confirmed late last week he will seek a third term as mayor of Rincon. The lone qualifier for a Rincon city council post Monday was Christina Shores Ricker.

Qualifying for municipal elections will run through Friday.
