Capt. Andrew Leroy Clark will celebrate his 90th birthday on Sept. 22.

He is a World War II veteran who fought in the battle of Iwo-Jima. He and his 11 brothers and sisters were raised on Tybee Island, and in the Savannah area.

He also lived in Key West, Fla. He now resides in Effingham County.  His wife, Eleanor, was raised in Effingham County, and she was a Salzburger.

Andrew and Eleanor were married for 67 years and they raised five children.

After serving in the Navy, he became a shrimp fisherman. He eventually purchased his own boat and became a ship captain. He spent a great deal of time with his family and enjoyed sharing his wife’s Southern cooking with family members. After dinner, he and his wife would play guitar and sing songs with their family and friends. That’s how they enjoyed their Sunday afternoons.

Clark has a commemorative brick honoring him and his service in the military in the veterans memorial on River Street in Savannah.

His daughter, Jackie Wendelken and her husband Robert, are planning a barbecue and Lowcountry boil birthday celebration to honor Captain Andy on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. at her home on 711 Goshen Rd. Call 826-2034 or 826-5530 for directions. All friends and family are invited to bring a covered dish and join the celebration.
