A Springfield man accused of kidnapping a Springfield woman last December and forcing her to remove money from her bank account has begun serving his sentence for the incident.

Brandon Allen Peters, 36, was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he pled guilty to a litany of charges stemming from the incident. He admitted guilt to charges of aggravated assault, false imprisonment and theft by taking. He was sentenced to 20 years on the aggravated assault and to 10 years each consecutively on the other charges.

Had Peters received a maximum sentence on all charges, he could have faced life plus 60 years. He had been indicted on one count of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of robbery, one count of burglary, one count of theft by taking and one count of battery.

Peters kidnapped a woman from her Deer Road home and tied her up with duct tape. He forced the woman into her own 1999 Dodge Caravan and drove to a nearby automated teller machine to take money from her bank account. He also took her cell phone, purse and debit card.

The woman managed to get out of the van in the bank parking lot, according to investigators. After she fell to the ground, Peters ran over her leg and drove away.

Peters later discarded the vehicle on Race Path Road and stole a dump truck and fled to Liberty County. Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies learned Peters was at a house in Midway and notified the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office. Liberty deputies then arrested Peters.

Peters had an extensive criminal history before the incident. He was released in April 2006 after serving nearly 10 years in prison. He had been sentenced to 10 years for an April 1996 robbery. He also received one year each for simple battery and criminal trespass for a November 1995 incident and five years for entering a vehicle in that same incident.
