Chamber to hold Lunch ’n Learn

POSTED: September 12, 2013 8:24 p.m.

The Effingham Chamber of Commerce has announced plans for a business Lunch ‘n Learn meeting Wednesday from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Effingham College and Career Academy on Highway 21.

Speakers for the lunch meeting will be John Powers of Bottom Line Marketing in Savannah and Lisa Scarbrough, with Paula Deen Enterprises. The theme for the session will be business marketing, with Scarbrough focusing on the best use of social media to market your business, and Powers focusing on marketing on a shoestring. Powers will teach how a small business can drive business to its door on a limited promotional budget.

Powers commenced a six-year career in the human resources sector as personnel manager, first at Chatham County, and then at the Georgia Ports Authority.  While at the GPA, he was promoted into the marketing department, ultimately rising to director of trade relations, a post he held for another eight years.

He later headed industrial and economic development efforts of Statesboro and Bulloch County. He was recruited back to Savannah to become president of Transales, an international distribution operation.  He later moved to Atlanta, where he held two positions as director of marketing for W.G. Carroll Co. and Samuel Shapiro and Company.

From 2000-05, he served as director of marketing for Sullivan’s Administrative Managers.  Since that time, he has formed and heads Bottom Line Marketing, a firm that helps businesses formulate, execute and measure plans for strategic expansion.

He has served in various capacities of the Notre Dame Alumni Association, including a three-year stint as an elected member of their National Alumni Board. He is past president of the Propeller Club. He is a graduate of Leadership Savannah.

Scarbrough has been working in web development and online marketing since 1997. She spent eight years working as a web developer for a firm in Savannah before becoming the online community manager for Paula Deen Enterprises, where she has been the last four years.

Scarbrough is also the co-director of Coastal Pet Rescue, an all-volunteer non-profit she founded 10 years ago, which indoctrinated her into the world of grassroots marketing and public relations. She also serves as the congregation council vice president for St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rincon.

Scarbrough was named one of the Top 10 Working Women of Savannah in 2007 and Small Business Chamber of Savannah’s Community Advocate of the Year in 2010. She holds degrees from Andrew College, Georgia Southern University and Duquesne University, and is a graduate of Leadership Savannah, Leadership Effingham and Leadership Southeast Georgia.

The fee for Lunch ‘n Learn is $12 for Chamber members and $15 for non-members. For more information or to sign up, call the Chamber at 754-3301 or email beckyshea@effinghamcounty.com.
