Effingham County 4-H’ers joined others across the U.S. in celebrating National 4-H Week.

Local 4-H’ers chose to serve the Effingham community by bagging groceries for patrons at the Harvey’s grocery store in Springfield.

Effingham 4-H’ers are known for engaging in many activities, such as “Kids in the Kitchen,” a cooking club that meets twice a month at the Extension Office, “Bee Club,” a hands-on club that meets on the south end of the county at the Warnell Educational Building on Highway 17, a shooting sports club and most recently a new archery club.

However, none are more important than their venues of service, including collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, collecting canned goods for local food pantries, assisting at the Pregnancy Care Center and making tasty treats for elderly residents of various retirement facilities.

4-H helps mold Effingham County kids from as early as fifth grade to graduation. For more information on the youth development program and its many opportunities, call 4-H agent Abby Smith at 754-8040.
