“Great minds think alike” was the goal of the Effingham County 4-H Challenge Bowl team as they ventured to the Georgia State Fair in Perry.

This was the first time Effingham County 4-H participated in the Challenge Bowl competition. Team members were Marci Delcampo, Rhett Hatcher, Grayson Higginbotham, Alissa Mincey, Sophie Usher, Chase Weitman, Hannah Weitman and Lexie Wells.

The 4-H’ers “spent hours upon hours” preparing for the competition, according to Effingham County 4-H agent Abby Smith. Although the Effingham team did not bring home first place, Smith said the experience prepared the students well for next year’s competition.

“This competition was a lot of fun for the students and for me as well,” Smith said. “It was a way to bring a team of 4-H members in sixth-12th grades to work toward achieving a common goal and bridge the age gap. Seeing these students practice together, encourage each other and work together as a team was what 4-H is all about.”

The Challenge Bowl competition challenges its participants to be “fast on their feet” as they race to their buzzers in hopes of answering the questions correctly. They were asked questions from four different categories: family and consumer science, agriculture, 4-H and identity theft.

Smith and Rene Hatcher coached the Effingham team. Scorekeepers for the competition were Jessica Mincey and Faye Lively.

“Even though we did not win, I couldn’t be any prouder of these guys,” Smith said. “We will definitely continue the tradition of the 4-H Challenge Bowl next year.”
