Lions Club Parade to kick off holiday season

POSTED: November 7, 2013 8:32 p.m.

The start to Effingham County’s holiday season is ready to hit the streets.

The annual Rincon Noon Lions Club Christmas parade will be held Nov. 23 in Rincon, and Danny Fries of the Lions Club said entries are lining up. The 3rd Infantry Division Band is expected to be in the procession, and the Alee Temple Shrine units have been invited, Fries said.

“This is a family event,” he said.

Both Effingham high school bands will be participating, and there also will be a number of dance troupes, churches, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Brownies troops involved in the parade. Santa also will be part of the parade, riding atop an antique fire truck.

“Old tractors are welcome, and antique cars and trucks are welcome,” Fries said.

Horses also may be part of the parade.

Trophies and plaques will be presented to winning entries, and entries will be judged on appearance and adherence to the Christmas theme, according to Fries.

Candy will be allowed to be thrown by parade participants, but only by those who are at least 16 years old and candy must be thrown all the way to the curb, Fries said.

The parade will form at Macomber Park at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 23 and start at 10 a.m. The procession will turn onto Lexington Avenue, then left onto Fourth Street and left onto Highway 21. From there, it will continue down Highway 21 before making a left onto Ninth Street, going back to Lexington and returning to Macomber to disband.

Entry forms can be picked up at Guyton, Rincon or Springfield city hall and can be either mailed in or turned in the day of the parade.

“They can bring them with them,” Fries said.

The parade grand marshal will be announced at a later date.

For more information on the parade, call Fries at 663-2412.
