Orchestra to conduct annual holiday concert, cookie sale

POSTED: December 2, 2013 8:39 p.m.

Effingham Community Orchestra will present its seventh annual holiday concert and homemade cookie sale Dec. 8 at the Effingham County Recreation and Parks gym in Springfield.

The concert begins at 3 p.m.  Admission is free. The cookie sale immediately follows the concert. Cookies are $5 per baker’s dozen.

The orchestra will play several pieces it has not performed before, along with other favorites. There will be two cookie lines and two cashiers to make cookie shopping go faster.

“Our holiday concert and homemade cookie sale has become a tradition for Effingham and surrounding communities,” said orchestra director Andrea Huff. “It is our most popular concert. Attendees from past concerts tell us they look forward all year long to hearing our holiday music and buying our delicious cookies.”

There also will be a drawing for a new Austin acoustic guitar and accessory pack, provided by Island Guitars and Teaching Studios.

“The program of music we’ve planned includes new pieces that the orchestra has not previously performed, as well as audience favorites from the past,” Huff said. “We’ll perform medleys of traditional carols, jazzy modern pieces and ‘Hallelujah Chorus.’ Music about Santa will delight the children.

“The orchestra’s musicians and volunteers are looking forward to providing a wonderful and exciting holiday experience for the entire community,” Huff said. “We invite everyone to begin the holiday season by joining us for this afternoon of fun.”

The Effingham Community Orchestra has more than 50 musicians, including both adults and high school youth musicians. It is funded solely by contributions from participants and interested supporters.

In January, the orchestra will be accepting additional musicians. Information is available by visiting the Web site at www.effinghamcommunityorchestra.org. Interested musicians can contact Huff by email at effinghamcommunityorchestra@windstream.net or by calling the orchestra’s office at 826-5300 ext. 110.
