In more than ways than one, it was a big check presentation for the Mars Theatre on Tuesday night.

The Effingham Chamber of Commerce, through its annual Oktoberfest event, presented the city and the Springfield Revitalization Corporation a check for $1,600. SRC members, who worked the Oktoberfest beer tent, also raised $401 in tips.

Chamber Executive Director Rick Lott, along with Wayne Kight and Gussie Nease of the SRC, presented the oversized check to Springfield cultural affairs director Tommy Deadwyler — before handing an actual check to the city.

“I am tickled to death to know Tommy Deadwyler is working with the Mars,” Lott said.

Lott also said he believes the Mars will be a catalyst for new growth in Springfield.

“It’s going to take this city to a place it hasn’t seen before,” he said. “The Chamber stands behind the Mars.”

In four years of the Oktoberfest, the Chamber has raised $5,895 for the Mars renovation.

“We appreciate all the hard work to help raise money for the Mars,” Nease said.
