Scott to lead annual MLK Jr. Day parade

Longtime Rincon City Council member Levi Scott Jr. will lead the 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Springfield.


The parade will be held Jan. 20 at 10 a.m.


The son of the late Levi Scott Sr. and Jessie Mae Scott, Scott grew up in Effingham County and went to Effingham public schools. An environmental consultant, Scott, 62, is married to Bertha Scott, who is the staff development coordinator at Effingham Health System. They have one daughter, Nakia Scott-Norman, and one son, Levi A. Scott. They also have four grandsons, Dashod, Hunter, Tyler and Zack.


Scott is a member at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church in Rincon, where he served on the deacon board. He also has served as executive of the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Association, a member of the NAACP, Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Georgia, Association of Linen Management, Georgia Municipal Association and Helping Young People Excel.


He also served on the board of directors for the Effingham Chamber of Commerce, lieutenant governor of the Optimist International of Georgia and youth director of the Optimist International Georgia District, president of the Evening Optimist Club of Springfield, CEO of Effingham Victim Witness Assistance Program, Private Industrial Council of Georgia, member of the Effingham Development Authority, member of the YMCA board of directors, vice chairman of the Rincon Planning and Zoning Commission, member of the Coastal Regional Development Council and mayor pro tem of Rincon.


Scott also received the Distinguished President Award of the Optimist International, the Optimist Key Man Award and the Optimist Star Award. He also has received the Outstanding Young Man of America Award and was honored from the state House of Representatives for his dedication to civic leadership and commitment to the community.


He obtained an ethics in government certificate from Kerry College and completed the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute for Elected Officials through the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government.


In his leisure time, Scott enjoys spending time with family, gardening, reading, traveling sports and being active.
