Five people killed in New Year’s wrecks across state

The state Department of Public Safety reported five deaths on state roads during the New Year’s Day holiday.

There were four fatal crashes reported, with Marietta Police, Waycross Police and the State Patrol’s Cartersville post investigating one crash each and the Cobb County Police handling two such accidents.

GSP troopers reported 137 crashes with 52 injuries during the New Year’s Day holiday, which ran from Tuesday at 6 p.m. to Wednesday at midnight.

There were seven fatalities on Georgia roads for the same period last year.

There were no fatalities stemming from vehicle accidents for the 2013 Christmas holidays, according to the State Patrol. Troopers investigated 90 wrecks across the state, resulting in 51 injuries. There were 26 deaths on roads in the state for the 2012 Christmas holiday.
