Springfield native Robert M. Williams Jr. has been named to Georgia Trend magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential Georgians.”

The publication’s 16th edition of the state’s power men and women includes elected officials, attorneys, judges, top business executives and university presidents. The list is published annually in the statewide publication’s January issue.

Williams, 63, is publisher of the SouthFire Newspapers Group, headquartered in Blackshear. The company’s news holdings include The Blackshear Times, The Alma Times, the Charlton County Herald, The Telfair Enterprise, the Monroe County Reporter and the Three Rivers Gazette.

Last year, Williams was elected president of the National Newspaper Association, the country’s alliance of weekly and daily newspapers. He is also a past president of the Georgia Press Association.

Williams began his newspaper career as a student sportswriter at the Springfield (now Effingham) Herald in 1966.
