Schools to be closed Tuesday and Wednesday

POSTED: January 27, 2014 3:32 p.m.

With potentially dangerous winter weather expected to move into the area, the Effingham County School System has canceled school for students on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Also, all extracurricular events for those two days are canceled.

School officials will provide an update as soon as possible regarding classes and activities for Thursday.

Tuesday will be a half-day for school employees. All school system staff should report to work on Tuesday at their usual time.

Schools will be closed on Wednesday for all students, faculty and staff.

Also, all Savannah Technical College campuses will be closed all day Wednesday. The college will reopen Thursday for normal operations, barring any unforeseen power or travel issues.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Effingham County through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

"Although we are expecting some snow, our biggest concern at this time is ice. When we do begin seeing winter weather, we are asking all motorists to stay off of the roadways," said Effingham County Sheriff's Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

If people absolutely must drive in snowy and icy conditions, the ECSO advises to avoid overpasses and bridges because those tend to freeze over first.

"There is no safe way to drive on ice," Ehsanipoor said. "It doesn't matter how slowly you drive."
