Four-way stop at Blue Jay, Midland to start Tuesday

POSTED: February 3, 2014 8:33 p.m.

Effingham County is preparing to go live with new safety improvements to the intersection of Blue Jay Road and Midland Road. The intersection will officially be a four-way stop Tuesday around 11 a.m. As a true four-way stop, all traffic will be required to stop and check both directions for oncoming traffic.

Flashing notice boards have informed motorists of the change for the past seven days, and Effingham County Sheriff’s Office deputies have been flashing the intersection to let motorists know of the changing traffic control devices. Effingham County Public Works Department will be onsite today installing twin 48-inch high intensity prismatic stop signs in each direction of the intersection and required “stop ahead” signs.

The existing flashing signal will be changed from two-direction red to four-direction red. Rumble strips were installed Monday on Midland Road as motorists approach from either direction on Midland. Rumble strip improvements are scheduled for Blue Jay Road in the coming days.

Motorists are encouraged to approach this intersection with caution to make note of the changing of the traffic control directives, and as work crews will be in the area. Law enforcement will be on-site again today to alert motorists to the change. Deputies will remain on site monitoring traffic in the area for several days following the official change.
