SEMS Y Club makes blankets for orphanage

POSTED: May 31, 2007 5:02 a.m.

South Effingham Middle School  Y Club members participate in school and community projects every month of the school year, but for the first time their efforts are going global. Y Club officers recently heard about the Acts III Global Ministry Orphanage Project in Malawi, Africa and felt led and inspired to be a part of such a great ministry project.

Julie McEwen from Acts III Global Ministries was invited to talk about the orphanage project with members during the March meeting. She showed a video about the project that gave detail about the area, the people and the needs. She also brought items made by people of the village where the orphanage is to be built. All of this was done in in an effort for the students to be able to relate closely to how important the orphanage will be to the people in this region of Africa.

Each student was given a list of items that could be donated to help the orphanage, and while the Y Club members brought in items, they wanted to work on a donation that would be more personable.

Ginger Simonin, a longtime Y Club and Global Ministries supporter, suggested making fleece blankets. So, for two meeting sessions, Y Club members worked diligently in groups making blankets. Pinned to each blanket is a personalized greeting card and a group photo from the students that worked on the blanket.

A small photo album of the Y Club members working on the blankets, various pictures of the school building, and daily activities at SEMS was put together so that it can be shared with all the children in the orphanage.

Along with this package is a disposable camera for the children of the orphanage to take pictures of their school and activities and return to SEMS Y Club.
