STC moving adult education classes

POSTED: August 15, 2008 5:01 a.m.

SAVANNAH — The Savannah Technical College Adult Education program, currently housed at the Richard Arnold facility, will be relocated during August to the college’s Savannah Campus at 5717 White Bluff Rd. The Adult Education program offers general education development classes, testing and English as a second language (ESL) courses.

Adult education classes held at the Richard Arnold campus and the Savannah campus of Savannah Technical College will be suspended beginning Aug. 15 and resume Sept. 2.  All other adult education and GED testing sites in Savannah, including Housing Authority of Savannah, Savannah State University, Moses Jackson and Savannah Impact Program will continue without interruption, as will the Bryan, Effingham and Liberty County campuses.

“As the lease on the Richard Arnold building was coming to an end, we thought this was the most efficient and effective way to make change happen,” said Charita Boles, executive director of Adult Education.  “Allowing students the opportunity to be a part of a collegiate atmosphere will create an environment more conducive to workforce readiness.”

Approximately 300 students will be affected by the move. According to Boles, the move was planned for summer to minimize the disruption to students.

Savannah Technical College assumed administrative oversight for the Adult Education program from the Savannah Chatham Board of Education in July 2006. For the fiscal year ending June 30, the program served more than 2,100 students and was second in the state for credentialing in GED testing.

Pre-registration for GED testing is on Sept. 9 and class registration begins Sept. 22.  For more information about courses and testing or to register for classes, call (912) 201-5527.
