POSTED: June 21, 2007 5:04 a.m.

ATLANTA — Christina Hillman from Ebenezer Middle School received first place at the National History Day in Georgia state contest that was held May 6 at Macon State College.

She will now represent Georgia in the national contest from June 10-14 in College Park, Md.

Hillman worked throughout the 2006-2007 academic year to develop her exhibit, titled “Pope John Paul II - Do Not Be Afraid!” All of the state contest entries related to the theme “Triumph and Tragedy in History” and required the students to explore their chosen topics in depth, via research of primary and secondary sources.

Hillman’s mentor teacher is Ms. Haywood from Ebenezer Middle School.

The Georgia Humanities Council sponsors National History Day in Georgia, which serves approximately 3,500 sixth through twelfth graders across Georgia. The Council also partners with organizations that sponsor regional contests, including the Troup County Historical Society and Georgia Southwestern State University.
