STC, Savannah Air Center partner for job opportunities

POSTED: June 23, 2007 5:06 a.m.

SAVANNAH — For students looking to build a career in the thriving aerospace industry, Savannah Technical College and Savannah Air Center have partnered to offer guaranteed interviews to students who successfully complete one of three industry-specific certification programs beginning in July.

The programs include aircraft structural assembly, luxury craft cabinet making and exterior paint.
The college will host Information Sessions on June 13, 20 and 27 at 3 p.m. in the Industrial Technology Center Atrium on the Savannah Campus, 5717 White Bluff Rd. At the sessions, prospective students can meet company representatives, learn about career options and get admissions and financial aid assistance.

Savannah Air Center, a full-service aviation center offering corporate aircraft operators the highest quality maintenance, avionics installation and repair, interior completions and exterior painting, will open its new hangar in November and with it, a number of new jobs — approximately 60 in aircraft assembly and exteriors and 20 in the luxury cabinet making area.

Students who successfully complete the Savannah Technical College certificate program will be guaranteed an interview.

And, as a hiring incentive, Savannah Air Center will offer students a modest wage during their training period.

“This is another example of the strength of the workforce development efforts of Savannah Technical College,” said Vice President for Economic Development Ken Boyd. “In a little more than a year, we’ve developed these kinds of partnerships with nearly 20 of our area’s leading employers.”

To date, 18 companies are offering guaranteed interviews to STC students in critical areas of manufacturing, logistics and distribution.

The Georgia Department of Labor will assist Savannah Air Center in recruitment and screening activities including directed client referrals and other DOL publicity venues.

Those interested should call the Georgia Department of Labor at (912) 356-2773 or attend an information session at Savannah Technical College.
