SEHS students excel at region competition

POSTED: May 8, 2007 5:02 a.m.

St. Patrick’s Day was a special day in the lives of six FCCLA members from South Effingham High School. These students competed in what is known as STAR Events, which stands for Students Taking Action with Recognition.

Region 7 competition was held in Baxley for schools from Effingham, Ware, Chatham, Wayne and Bulloch counties and the Brunswick area.

SEHS students Hershel Anderson, Tamela Wallis and Jacob Terrell competed in Culinary Arts against Bulloch County and won a silver medal and the right to compete at the state level this month.

Megan Fiocca competed in the category of Illustrated Talk with her project on caring for the elderly and also won a silver medal at region.

Fiocca competed at the Georgia National Fair in Perry, held in October, and won a gold medal and first place in the Illustrated Talk Competition.

Also competing at region were April Powell and Hillary Driggers with their project on STOP the Violence. These two ladies performed a puppet show for the Family and Consumer Sciences classes at SEHS as well as the 4-year-old pre-K class. These two girls also advanced to state competition this month in Atlanta.

FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. It is the only middle and high school student organization with the family as its focus.

The SEHS FCCLA chapter has 62 members and has worked in our community to help those in need with projects such as donating baby items to the Savannah Care Crisis Pregnancy Center, collecting money for the Empty Stocking Fund and donating decorated pumpkins to the nursing home to brighten the lives of patients there.
