Dunham to deliver keynote speech at MLK Jr. breakfast

Radio talk show host and president of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute, Savannah chapter, Chester Dunham will be the keynote speaker at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance breakfast Monday. The breakfast will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the Effingham County Administrative Complex.

Dunham was born in Harris Neck and raised in Darien and attended school in McIntosh County. He moved to Detroit and attended Cass Technical College. He later attended the George Meany Labor Studies Institute in Silver Springs, Md., and received a certificate of excellence in labor law studies.

He is the head safety director of the International Longshoreman’s Association, Local 1414, in Savannah. He has served in numerous capacities with Local 1414, including vice president for 11 years and on the executive board of directors for 20 years. He also organized the ILA Maintenance and Mechanics Locals, representing them while serving as vice president of Local 1414 for several years. Dunham also was president of the ILA Federal Credit Union and assisted in the development of the merging of the Fort Stewart Georgia Federal Credit Union with GeoVista Credit Union. Dunham serves as a board member and legislative director of political affairs for GeoVista Credit Union.

The A. Phillip Randolph Institute’s mission is to strengthen ties between the labor movement and the civil rights movement. The organization’s principles promote and support economic justice, black voter participation, racial equality and opportunity and political, economic and social democracy at home and abroad. Dunham also was a founding board member of the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum.

He is host of “The Dunham Report” on WSOK-AM 1230 on Saturday nights from 7-8 p.m. Topics include labor and civil rights and social and economic justice issues.

Dunham is married to Antoinette Dunham and is a member of First African Baptist Church.
