POSTED: January 19, 2009 5:42 p.m.

The Effingham County Board of Education is proud to announce that all five of its Title I schools have been recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as Title I Distinguished Schools.

Each school, the number of consecutive years it has been recognized and the award amount are listed below:
Rincon Elementary School — seven consecutive years in AYP/5 years distinguished, received $1,263

Guyton Elementary School — six consecutive years in AYP/four years distinguished, received $842

Sand Hill Elementary School — six consecutive years in AYP/four years distinguished, received $842

Springfield Elementary School — six consecutive years in AYP/four years distinguished, received $842

Effingham County Middle School — three consecutive years in AYP/1 year distinguished, received a certificate

Superintendent Randy Shearouse congratulated all staff members at each of the Title I schools, saying, “I commend them all for their hard work and dedication.  To have each of our Title I schools recognized says a lot about this district’s commitment to student achievement.”

Title I schools are schools that qualify for federal funding due to the significant population of students who are economically disadvantaged. The federal funds received are used to assist with the academic improvement of the students.

All Title I schools that have made adequate yearly progress (AYP) for three consecutive years are recognized as Title I Distinguished Schools and are awarded certificates, while those who have made AYP four or more years receive certificates and monetary awards which are paid for out of federal funds.

This was the seventh year in a row that Rincon Elementary made AYP and the fifth year they have been recognized as a Title I Distinguished School.

“I credit this accomplishment to the hard work of our teachers, students and parents,” said Dr. Paige Dickey, principal. “I am very thankful that Rincon Elementary has such hard working teachers who challenge their students to do their very best each day. I am also appreciative of our parents who value education, encourage their children and work with them at home. Everyone works together and these efforts enable our students to be successful.”
