Guyton City Council members approved another extension for Randy Alexander to continue his double duty as interim city manager.
Alexander, also the Guyton police chief, had his duty as interim city manager extended for six months, with his new term beginning May 9. His extension as interim city manager will end Nov. 9. Council members cited budgetary constraints as extenuating circumstances in approving the extension of Alexander’s role as interim city manager another six months at their meeting Tuesday morning.
Council members also have approved the city’s budget for the 2010 fiscal year. The city’s budget is expected to grow from the planned $1.23 million for the current fiscal year to $1.33 million for FY10.
The current fiscal year budget ended up at $1.4 million.
The city is projecting to collect $15,000 more in the coming fiscal year in beer and wine taxes and to collect $50,900 in police department fees and fines. But Guyton is anticipating less revenue from ad valorem tax — down to $97,500 from $100,000 — and also less in building permits and zoning fees. The city budgeted $38,750 in building permits and zoning fees for FY09 but expects only $6,700 from those two line items for the coming budget.
Guyton’s fiscal year took effect July 1. Council members held a special called meeting Monday at 8 a.m. to adopt the FY10 budget.
Council members also approved a change in the proposed ordinance for a wrecker rotation.
“We want to make everybody eligible, big and small,” Alexander said.
Council members agreed to extend the application period for towing services wishing to be part of the city’s wrecker rotation and to make the storage requirement less stringent. The original requirements called for towing companies to have 10,000 square feet of storage space. The amendment to the ordinance cuts that down to 5,000 square feet and also extends the distance a towing company office can be from its storage area.
“Ten thousand square feet is a big lot,” Alexander said. “A lot of towing companies have their office and their storage area several miles (apart).”
The deadline for applications to be part of the rotation also were extended from Sept. 1 to Dec. 15.
