Workshop to be held on IRS Form 990

POSTED: July 6, 2009 3:52 p.m.

A workshop on the IRS’ new 990 Form for nonprofits will be held by the Georgia Center for Nonprofits on 3-5 p.m. at the United Way building at 428 Bull St. in Savannah in the first floor board room.

In the past, the IRS has required form 990s to be completed by all nonprofits with assets of $25,000 or more. However, in 2009, questions on the form have been greatly expanded and the IRS has stated that how these questions are answered may result in a nonprofit being flagged for possible audit.

All nonprofits completing the new form 990 should understand the scope of these new questions.

The July 21 workshop will overview the key aspects of the form nonprofits must understand with regard to both federal reporting, and the greater transparency the form presents to anyone looking at a nonprofit’s 990 form. Many new questions about whether a nonprofit follows specific management and governance policies and practices were designed to challenge nonprofits to enact more policies and procedures pertaining to management and governance.

Tax experts from Moore, Stephens, Tiller, CPAs and business advisors, will present the workshop.

The fee is $75 for members of the Georgia Center for Nonprofits or $90 for nonmembers. Scholarships of up to 50 percent are available on request to nonprofits without training budgets.

Advance registration is required. Call Sarah Todd at  (912) 234-9688 or register online at www.gcn.org/UnderstandingtheNew990formSavannah.aspx
