Schools to pitch in for Haiti relief

POSTED: January 15, 2010 9:24 a.m.

News reports from Haiti indicate that the need for shelter is one of the most critical items in the current rescue and relief efforts following the devastating earthquake that is estimated to have claimed over 50,000 lives.

As a result, the Effingham County School System is working with both Effingham County Rotary clubs to raise money for tents and other life-saving equipment provided by ShelterBox, an international Rotary club project that provides shelter for victims of disaster. Each box or kit costs $900 and contains a tent that will sleep 10 people, water purifying resources, tools and other life-sustaining equipment.

Jan. 22 is being designated as “Help for Haiti Day” and donations will be collected at each school, the central office, and the bus and maintenance facilities.

The money collected will then be given to the Rotary clubs of Effingham County to support the ShelterBox project.
