Driver dies after wreck at Highways 17 and 30

POSTED: August 5, 2011 2:36 p.m.

One man is dead following a two-car accident Thursday afternoon in southern Effingham County.

According to reports, at approximately 2 p.m., Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection of Highways 30 and 17 on a report of an accident with injuries. Upon arrival, Effingham County EMS found the driver of the GMC, 84-year-old Alfred Hubert Rahn of Guyton, slumped over the wheel. EMS also attended to the three occupants of the Nissan, complaining of injuries.

All four victims were transported to area hospitals, but Rahn went into full cardiac arrest while being transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center. Rahn died at approximately 2a.m. in surgery. It was determined that the fatal injuries were a result of the collision.

Witnesses say Rahn did make a full stop at the stop sign at Highway 17, but that it looked like he may have blacked out prior to crossing into the path of the Nissan.

No charges have been filed.
