An Effingham County Sheriff’s Office deputy involved in an early-morning crash Thursday has been released from the hospital.

The deputy was traveling north on Highway 21 and was en route to provide backup to a Springfield police officer, according to ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor. As the deputy went through the intersection of Highways 21 and 275, a semi, headed south on 21, attempted to turn left onto 275 and crossed into the deputy’spath.

"He took evasive maneuvers but still struck the semi," Ehsanipoor said.

The deputy’s patrol sustained extensive damage, and the deputy was taken to Effingham Hospital for treatment. He was released later Thursday.

"He was wearing his seat belt, which saved his life," Ehsanipoor said. "We’re certain of that."

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident and charges are pending.
