A Springfield man has been arrested on charges of purchasing the synthetically-produced drug “spice” online and then selling it in and around Effingham County.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Drug Suppression Team received information that a large amount of spice was to be delivered to a home on Springfield Tusculum Road. Investigators obtained a search warrant and found 75 packets of spice, according to Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

The homeowner, Jason Hinely, 37, ordered the spice online and was selling to individuals in this region, Ehsanipoor said.

Hinely was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and unlawful use of a communication device.

“We have taken a proactive stance on spice and removed it from our stores,” said Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie. “In this case, the person was purchasing it online and selling it on the streets.”

 A second man was arrested during the drug suppression team’s operation when he called Hinely to purchase spice.

Investigators set up a controlled buy and arrested Robert Sandy Mallard, 21, of Newington. Mallard was charged with attempt to commit a drug-related offense and unlawful use of a communication device.

“We will continue to pursue and arrest anybody trafficking in this dangerous substance,” McDuffie said.
