Pickup driver hits pedestrian, pole, knocks out power

POSTED: February 20, 2014 6:18 p.m.

An Effingham County man is suspected of driving under the influence in a wreck Tuesday that injured a pedestrian and knocked down a power pole.

The driver’s pickup truck swerved off Fort Howard Road, continued across a sidewalk and struck a utility pole around 4 p.m., according to Rincon Police Chief Phillip Scholl.

In the process, the truck hit a pedestrian, who escaped serious injury. The man was transported by EMS for treatment, but Scholl described him as being “in really good condition” considering the circumstances.

“It looks like the passenger-side mirror is what struck him,” Scholl said. “He was very lucky.”

The driver, whose name has not yet been released, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Rincon Police believe that the man was driving under the influence and are awaiting toxicology results from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Scholl said. In the meantime, the man is not in jail.

The Ford Ranger pickup hit the pole with enough force to split it into two pieces, according to Scholl.

“He literally drove up the pole,” he said. “The front of the truck was off the ground.”

The wreck knocked out electricity to nearly a thousand Georgia Power customers in Rincon for a few hours.
