Off-duty deputy sniffs out meth lab

Six people are in the Effingham County Jail facing various methamphetamine charges after an off duty Sheriff’s deputy observed suspicious activity and components to make a meth lab.

The deputy observed two individuals at an abandoned residence on Deerfield Court where there was a gas generator outside. According to reports, upon further investigation by the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office Drug Suppression Team, deputies located an active meth lab in the backyard and several items to manufacture methamphetamine in the attic.

Callie Cruz, 20, of Savannah, Joshua Cox, 21, of Guyton, and Kristen Deney, 22, of Rincon were charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and trafficking methamphetamine.

Steven Hanke, 20, of Pooler was charged with possession of tools during the commission of a crime and criminal trespass. Joshua Mcnelly, 18, of Savannah, was arrested and charged with criminal trespass and possession of methamphetamine after detention officers discovered methamphetamine in a body cavity.

Marcus Lafferty, 20, of Rincon, fled from deputies and was captured after they found him at his mother’s residence on Deerwood Court late Thursday afternoon.
