A Rincon man is in the Effingham County Jail after his arrest Sunday afternoon on a number of traffic charges, stemming from a high-speed chase.

According to Effingham County Sheriff’s deputies, Eugene Wiley was clocked in excess of 100 mph in his Ford Mustang around 3 p.m. A deputy chased Wiley to Wiley’s home on 4th Street in Rincon. Wiley then took off on foot and was apprehended by the deputy.

Charges include felony fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, reckless driving, driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license, among other charges.

Also, a wanted felon the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office began searching for was arrested late Thursday night in Screven County following a pursuit by Sylvania Police.

Brandon Smith, 27, of Rincon is being held in the Effingham County Jail stemming from a bench warrant issued by a superior court judge. Smith has an extensive criminal history.

Deputies asked for the public’s assistance and began receiving tips that led to his arrest.

He also will face additional charges in Screven County from the pursuit.
