The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol are asking for the public’s help in finding the driver who seriously injured a bicyclist in a hit-and-run Sunday night.

Mitchell Johnson, 47, of Guyton was hit from behind by an unknown vehicle while riding his bicycle south on Hodgeville Road near Forest Haven Road, according to ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Johnson is being treated for serious injuries at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Ehsanipoor said.

Investigators do not know in what direction the vehicle fled the scene, and they do not have a possible suspect vehicle description.

“Right now we have no witnesses,” Ehsanipoor said.

Shortly before 7 p.m., Ehsanipoor said, a woman driving south on Hodgeville Road noticed a mangled bicycle lying on the side of the road. She stopped her car, saw a man lying on the ground near the bicycle and called 911.

“He was pretty much left for dead,” Ehsanipoor said. “Thankfully the lady stopped and saw him.”

Anyone with any information or any possible witnesses are asked to contact the Georgia State Patrol or Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
