Citizens’ tip helps Guyton catch pot dealer

POSTED: January 7, 2013 6:49 p.m.

A tip from citizens led to a drug arrest over the weekend for the Guyton Police Department.

Guyton Police arrested a suspected drug dealer who was attempting to make a sale Saturday night in the middle of the road in the Cedar Lane-Davis Street area.

“We had several people call us, giving us tips about suspected drug activity,” said Guyton Police Chief Randy Alexander. “We decided we were going to do extra patrols in the area. It worked real well.”

Two officers on patrol had been briefed on the situation, and Chief Alexander said they saw what appeared to be a drug transaction taking place between someone in a car and another person standing in the middle of the road. As officers approached, the person on foot fled.

Officers pursued and caught him shortly thereafter. According to reports, they found five ounces of marijuana, a scale and what are known as dime bags.

“That was a high drug activity area,” Chief Alexander said. “The tips from the citizens really helped us out. We have a pretty good relationship with the citizens. We were pro-active, and sure enough, it paid off.”

The chief added that the department’s connection with the community is a boost to the department’s efforts.

“If the citizens trust you enough to call you about crime, especially drug activity, in their neighborhood, you know they trust the police,” he said. “We’re very proud of that.”

The investigation into the drug bust is continuing, Chief Alexander said, and more arrests are expected.
