The widow of a man accused of killing a Wilmington Island man and dismembering his body has been released from Effingham County Jail.

Kimberly Moretz, 40, was arrested and charged with concealing a death. Her husband Chad held her hostage for several hours Jan. 11 before she managed to escape. Members of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department SWAT team shot and killed Chad Moretz after he brandished an automatic weapon toward law enforcement officers.

Chad Moretz had made threats against law enforcement and had been arrested most recently in December for making terroristic threats.

Kimberly Moretz and her brother Kevin Lambert were charged with hiding the death of Charles Ray III, a Wilmington Island man who was friends with the Moretzes. Authorities believe Chad Moretz stabbed Ray to death in the kitchen of Moretz’s home in Westwood Heights — and then dismembered the body in an attempt to hide the death. Investigators believe Chad Moretz killed Ray, who suffered from Tourette’s syndrome, on or near New Year’s Day.

Investigators eventually found Ray’s head and hands in the home. The rest of his body was discovered in storage unit in South Carolina. The investigators also said that Kim Moretz rented the storage unit and knew what was going to be placed inside.

Kim Moretz and her brother also were charged with tampering with evidence and hindering the apprehension and prosecution of a criminal.

Kimberly Moretz’s bond was $27,700, including jail fees. She was released from jail early Wednesday morning.
