ECSO still seeks suspect in Clyo shooting

POSTED: February 18, 2013 7:06 p.m.

Effingham County Sheriff’s investigators continue to look for the man who shot two people, including a pregnant woman, in Clyo early Thursday morning.

According to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect kicked in the front door of a Reedsville Road home shortly after midnight and shot John Henry Martin, 46, and Someika Rashee Smith, 30.

Martin was shot once in the chest and Smith, who was eight months pregnant, was shot once in the leg and once in the abdomen. Despite Smith’s injuries, doctors delivered her healthy baby boy later Thursday, said ECSO spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

The victims described the shooter only as a black man, and a witness in the area said a man drove away in possibly a tan 1980s-model Dodge sedan. Investigators do not believe it was a random home invasion.

“We believe this specific residence and these specific people were targeted,” Ehsanipoor said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office at 754-3449.
