A Rincon couple was arrested Wednesday after more than three pounds of marijuana was delivered to their home on Warren Street.

Zachary Smith, 29, and Crystal Clifton, 29 were each charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Both are in the Effingham County Jail.

The marijuana investigators seized has a street value of more than $15,000, said Effingham County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Detective David Ehsanipoor.

Authorities in California notified the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office after a narcotics dog “alerted” on a package prior to it being shipped, Ehsanipoor said. Once the package was delivered to the home on Warren Street, deputies obtained a search warrant.

“All evidence indicates that package was intended for them,” Ehsanipoor said. “We found additional evidence inside the home. We believe they were involved in manufacturing and selling marijuana.”

That evidence, according to Ehsanipoor, includes plastic bags investigators believe were used to package marijuana and scales they believe were used to measure the drugs.

The investigation is ongoing and the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office is working with several other local and federal law enforcement agencies, Ehsanipoor said. More arrests could follow, he added.
